An animated music video for a single titled 'Singularity' by the rock band Alamance.
In my second collaboration with the band, I wanted to switch things up and focus on a purely plot-driven narrative rather than a collection of symbols and intertwined visuals. The story follows a hooded adventure as he journeys on toward singularity.
Pre-production
At the very start of the project, I spent some time brainstorming ideas with Josh, the lead singer of the band.
We agreed right off the bat that the main colours for this music video should be blue and white. A lot of the ideas for the environments originate in the song's lyrics. The mentions of deep water and mountains gave me an idea for an adventurer on this sort of impossibly tough journey that is fueled by deep conviction to achieve something, which borders with obsession.
A lot of the ideas were initially just a starting point to get the ball rolling, but surprisingly a good amount of them made it through to the final cut; the visual of a hand in the clouds, originally inspired by the famous space photo "Pillars of Creation" stayed as the main symbol for the character's longing all the way through. The same is true for the long ocean path and an idea of a big enemy in a cave-like setting.
Some sketches of the initial ideas.
The search for the visual of the main character felt impossibly long at times. The initial idea of a knight in heavy armor slowly turned into more of a mysterious adventurer. The silhouette of a very skinny person covered by big chunks of his attire, however, stayed with us until the very final concept.
The bad guy was a lot more straightforward. We wanted a big menacing silhouette and after some searching went through with an idea of a big robot-like concept with a huge torso.
